Pope Francis Dies on Easter Monday at 88: A Legacy of Compassion, Reform, and Global Impact

On Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 in his Vatican residence, the Domus Sanctae Marthae. His death, resulting from a stroke and subsequent heart failure, marked the end of a transformative 12-year papacy that redefined the Catholic Church’s role in the modern world.

Final Moments and Cause of Death

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, had been battling health issues, including type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Despite these challenges, he remained active in his duties, making a final public appearance on Easter Sunday. The following morning, he suffered a stroke leading to a coma and irreversible cardiac arrest. His last words, “thank you,” were directed to his longtime nurse, Massimiliano Strappetti.

A Papacy of Firsts and Reforms

Elected in March 2013, Pope Francis was the first Jesuit, the first from the Americas, and the first non-European pope in over a millennium. His tenure was marked by a commitment to humility, social justice, and inclusivity. He chose to live in the modest Casa Santa Marta rather than the Apostolic Palace and was known for his outreach to marginalized communities, including migrants and the LGBTQ+ population.

Global Reactions and Tributes

The news of Pope Francis’s death elicited an outpouring of grief and admiration worldwide. Leaders from various countries praised his dedication to peace, environmental stewardship, and interfaith dialogue. U.S. President Donald Trump, former Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama, and leaders from Europe, Asia, and Latin America highlighted his moral leadership and compassion.

Funeral Arrangements and Succession

Pope Francis’s body will lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica until his funeral on Saturday, April 26. He will be buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, as per his wishes. The College of Cardinals is expected to convene between May 6 and 12 to elect his successor.

Legacy and Impact

Pope Francis’s papacy is remembered for its emphasis on mercy, humility, and social justice. He sought to modernize the Church, address issues like climate change, and promote inclusivity. While his progressive stances attracted both praise and criticism, his influence on the Catholic Church and global affairs is undeniable.
