Country-level champions meet to strengthen interagency coordination of mental health and psychosocial support across humanitarian emergencies

In February 2025, co-chairs of mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) Technical Working Groups (TWGs) from humanitarian emergencies worldwide convened in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for a global meeting aimed at strengthening interagency coordination and sharing country-level experiences.

A Global Gathering for Mental Health in Emergencies

The meeting brought together representatives from various countries, including Ethiopia, Ukraine, and others, to discuss the challenges and successes in coordinating MHPSS responses during humanitarian crises. Participants shared insights on effective strategies, resource mobilization, and the integration of MHPSS into broader emergency response frameworks.

Strengthening Interagency Coordination

A key focus of the meeting was enhancing collaboration among different agencies involved in emergency responses. By sharing best practices and lessons learned, participants aimed to develop more cohesive and effective MHPSS strategies that can be adapted to various contexts. The discussions emphasized the importance of clear communication channels, defined roles and responsibilities, and joint planning among stakeholders.

Sharing Country-Level Experiences

Country representatives presented case studies highlighting their approaches to MHPSS in emergencies. For instance, Ukraine shared its experience in integrating mental health services into primary healthcare and community support systems amidst ongoing conflict. Ethiopia discussed its efforts in providing psychosocial support to displaced populations affected by internal conflicts and natural disasters.

Developing Tools and Guidelines

The meeting also served as a platform to review and refine existing MHPSS guidelines and tools. Participants provided feedback on the Inter-Agency Standing Committee’s (IASC) MHPSS guidelines, aiming to make them more applicable to diverse emergency settings. The goal is to ensure that these tools are user-friendly and adaptable, facilitating their implementation at the country level.

Looking Ahead: Building Resilient MHPSS Systems

As humanitarian emergencies become more complex, the need for robust and coordinated MHPSS responses is increasingly critical. The Addis Ababa meeting underscored the commitment of country-level champions to collaborate, innovate, and strengthen mental health support systems in crisis situations. By fostering interagency coordination and sharing practical experiences, the global community moves closer to ensuring comprehensive mental health care for those affected by emergencies.
