Jan Koum, Ukrainian-American businessman and co-founder of WhatsApp, is the ultimate rags-to-riches success story. His path from humble beginnings in Ukraine to founder of one of the world’s leading messaging platforms is motivational and educational.
Born on February 24, 1976, in Kyiv, Ukraine, Koum grew up in a household without hot water and faced the challenges of anti-Semitic sentiments prevalent in the region. At 16, seeking a better life, he immigrated to the United States with his mother and grandmother, settling in Mountain View, California. The family relied on food stamps, and Koum took up cleaning jobs to support them. His mother was a babysitter, and they resided in a one-bedroom apartment, usually struggling with finances.
Koum developed an interest in technology during his teenage years. He learned about computer networking from buying secondhand manuals and bringing them back to the store after reading them, in order to save money. This home-schooling inspired him to study computer science at San Jose State University while also employed as a security tester for Ernst & Young. It was through this job that he met Yahoo engineer Brian Acton, a meeting that sparked a critical alliance.
Koum came on board at Yahoo in 1997, serving for almost a decade under Acton’s direction. After stepping down at Yahoo in 2007, the pair spent a year abroad, pondering their next move. In 2009, encouraged by the promise of the App Store, Koum created a concept for a messaging app that would present users’ statuses. Koum chose to call it “WhatsApp,” referencing the term “What’s up?”.
In spite of early defeats, such as app crashes and disinterest by users, push notifications introduced in iOS enabled WhatsApp to inform users about status changes, making it an instantaneous messaging service. The user base of the app increased immensely with 250,000 users becoming active within a short time following the launch of WhatsApp 2.0.
WhatsApp’s dedication to user privacy and ad-free browsing appealed to users across the globe. By 2013, the application had 400 million monthly users. Facebook acquired WhatsApp in February 2014 for \\$19 billion, one of the biggest tech deals to date.
Koum was with WhatsApp until 2018, when he stepped down amidst differences with Facebook regarding privacy of data and the direction of the platform. After WhatsApp, Koum has been involved with philanthropy, particularly giving almost \\$140 million to Jewish causes in 2019 and 2020.
